Tanche is the name I heard throughout my life for the traditional Persian woven shoulder bag made from carpet or kilim. The standard Persian word is chanteh (چنته), but among the nomadic communities and people I knew, I heard it pronounced as Tanche. Although it is not the dictionary form, it is the word that stayed with me, and for that reason it carries a much stronger sense of memory and belonging.
Traditionally, the chanteh was a practical woven bag used to carry personal belongings and everyday necessities. Over time, the word also entered Persian idiomatic language. A familiar expression says:
«چیزی تو چنته نداره»
Literally, this means “He has nothing in his chanteh.” Figuratively, it describes someone who has little to offer, whether in knowledge, experience, ability, resources, or sometimes money.
For me, Tanche is therefore more than the name of a bag. It is a remembered word, connected to childhood, spoken language, nomadic traditions, and the idea of carrying what one has through life.
